Well the stimulus bill passed the house, and not a single Republican voted for it, which really isn't that surprising. I don't have a problem with not having any Republican votes for this bill; they're the party of neo-hooverism and cultural-political Pentecostalism, and if the last eight years have demonstrated anything, it's that they couldn't find good governance if we locked them in a closet with it. In other words, fuck the G.O.P.
Here's why I'm really pissed, though. I was operating under the impression that the reason this was a somewhat half-assed bill was that Obama et al was trying to get the Republicans on board. Since that, apparently, wasn't the issue here, then why the fuck is it so loaded with tax cuts and not, you know, actual stimuli? Why the fuck did we drop the family planning portion? Why the fuck didn't we Krugman that shit up?
The answer, I think, is that we got played. The graph above shows that we didn't even try to sell this bill. The partisan vote count shows that the Republicans weren't negotiating in good faith. And the bill itself shows that we were timid, hoping to get Reps. on board, even though Reps. had no intention of getting on board.
