New Comics Day II

Brian Wood's Northlanders is really, really good. It just works. I'm pretty sure I posted something similar last month, but I just want to go over a few more things. First off, the artwork is striking, not so much for the detail and ability, which are just fine, but for the use of color. Everything is in this kind of blue/grey colorscale, but there's no restraint evident. I don't know if that makes sense. Second, there's something very powerful about the story. There is something tragic and beautiful about fighting for a losing fight. There's something even more beautiful about knowing its a losing fight and choosing to join it despite yourself.

Later on Oberliner, re-reading kid's books only to discover they're not for kids (Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories), pseudo-politics, and Doom Patrol
